The last two meetings between these clubs had both been drawn, and for 45 minutes this one was heading the same way. Real Sociedad de Fútbol 2-1 RCD Espanyol de Barcelona, level at 1-1 at the interval, decided by a single goal in the second half.

The pre-match tables made Sociedad look far worse than they were. Nineteenth, no points, a goal difference of -4 — and both of those defeats away from home, at Betis and at Real Madrid, the clubs that finished fifth and second last season. More usefully, it removes the misleading part of Sociedad's record: a club that finished tenth is not in trouble because it lost away to the sides that finished second and fifth. That was never the read, and now it is not the table either.

Espanyol keep the three points they had. Their two matches have both been at home, and this was the first look at them on the road, so the honest summary is that we still know very little — one win over the club that finished eighteenth, one defeat by the club that finished second, and one narrow loss away. Nothing there separates them from where they finished last season, which was level with the team that just beat them.

The reasoning was that the table was misreading both clubs and the head-to-head was not. Two drawn meetings, two clubs level on points in May, and a home side whose zero-point start had been assembled entirely on the road — that pointed at a home win or a draw far more strongly than nineteenth against ninth suggested. The selection covered both, which mattered: at half-time it was live on the draw rather than on the win, and only the second-half goal turned it into the more comfortable of the two outcomes. Medium confidence was the right label for a fixture whose last two legs had both finished level.
