Six goals at the Reale Arena, four of them before half-time: Real Sociedad 3-3 Alavés, level at 2-2 at the break and level again by full time after one more from each side.

On the table this looked like a mismatch. Real Sociedad came in seventh on 41 points from 30 games with a goal difference of +1; Alavés were fifteenth on 32 from the same number played, at -11. Nine points and twelve goals of difference between them, with the better-placed side at home.

The half-time score is where that reading came apart. A team fifteenth in the division scoring twice inside forty-five minutes away from home does not leave much of the pre-match hierarchy standing, and Sociedad were reduced to matching goals rather than controlling the game. They scored three at their own ground and still did not win, which is the least efficient way a home favourite can spend an afternoon.

The pairing's recent history was a better guide than the standings were. A six-goal draw in which the lower-placed side twice matched a top-half team fits that record far more comfortably than a routine home win would have.

Both clubs took a point: Sociedad to 42, Alavés to 33. Because the match finished level, neither goal difference moved, which for Sociedad means a +1 they badly needed to improve stayed exactly where it was.

With seven rounds remaining, two dropped points at home to a bottom-half side is the kind of result that decides where a European push finishes rather than whether it exists. Sociedad remain in the conversation, but they now need other teams to lose ground rather than simply holding their own.

For Alavés, a point at a top-half ground is a survival point, and it extends their unbeaten run in this fixture to four matches. Thirty-three points with a -11 goal difference is not safety in mid-April, but taking something from a trip where nothing was expected is how a side in fifteenth stays out of trouble.
