SC Paderborn 07 0-1 SC Freiburg: Bundesliga Match Report, 5 September 2026

One goal, scored before half-time, was the whole of SC Paderborn 07 0-1 SC Freiburg. Nothing more was added at either end after the break, which makes this the narrowest kind of away win: a lead taken early and held for forty-five minutes.

That is a result Freiburg's 2025/26 road record said they would rarely produce. They went 4-3-10 away from home last season, winning four of seventeen and losing ten, scoring eighteen and conceding thirty-five, with 32 of their 47 points collected at their own ground. Only one of those four away wins came by more than a single goal, and nor did this one. The shape is exactly right; it is the frequency that is the story, because last season it arrived roughly once in four attempts.

Paderborn arrived with exactly one Bundesliga match behind them, a goalless draw away at Mainz, and no top-flight season before that; the only recorded meeting between these clubs is a 2-0 Paderborn win at Freiburg in January 2020, six and a half years old and not evidence of anything current. Their first two matches in the division have now produced no goals scored and one conceded. That is a promoted side defending well and not scoring, or it is two matches, and two matches is what it is.

Freiburg have six points from two matches, having won at home by three goals and away by one. Paderborn have a point, from a goalless draw at Mainz. Both statements are true and neither is a form line yet.

The useful consequence concerns the away record rather than the table. Freiburg's problem last season was entirely on the road — fifteen points from seventeen matches, ten defeats, seven of them by two goals or more. Three points from their first away trip of the new campaign is the exact thing their 2025/26 could not do reliably. Whether that is a change or simply one of the four wins in seventeen arriving early is not answerable from here.

For Paderborn, a one-goal home defeat by a side that finished seventh is not a bad afternoon for a promoted club. It is also the second afternoon of a long season.

Our pre-match call was Double Chance 1X (SC Paderborn 07 or Draw) at 1.60, rated low confidence, and it lost to the scenario we named in the preview as the most likely way it would.

The position rested on one measurement: Freiburg failed to win 76 per cent of their away matches last season, while 1.60 implied only about 63 per cent. We wrote that the obvious objection was fair — that 4-3-10 was compiled against opposition including the champions and the top four, and that against a promoted side the applicable rate should be higher. It was higher. That objection is why the rating was low, and the rating is the part of the page that held up.

What was misjudged is simply the size of the adjustment for opponent quality. We named it and then declined to price it, taking a season-long average into a fixture where the average did not apply.
