Everything that decided this match had happened by the interval. Sevilla FC 1-3 Club Atlético de Madrid, and the half-time score was 0-3 — three goals for the visitors in the first 45 minutes, one for the hosts in the second, and a contest that was effectively over before it was half done.

That was not the shape the tables pointed at. Sevilla had won both of their opening fixtures, 2-1 at home to Rayo and 3-1 away at Athletic, and sat fourth on six points with a +3 difference. Atlético had taken four from two, a 2-0 win over Málaga and a 2-2 draw with Villarreal, both at home; this was their first away trip of the campaign. On two matches each, the home side had the better record.

Two matches each is also the reason not to make much of that. The one piece of evidence that did argue for Sevilla was the fixture itself. Last season's meetings went 3-0 to Atlético in Madrid and 2-1 to Sevilla in Andalusia — both decided by the home side, and by margins that suggested venue mattered here. It did not this time.

Sevilla's perfect start is over, and the way it ended is the informative part: not a narrow loss to a better side but a three-goal deficit inside 45 minutes. Six points from three matches remains a decent return for a club that won only twelve league games all last season, and nothing here retires the two wins that came before it. It does mean that the early table, which briefly had them fourth, was flattering a side that finished fifteenth.

For Atlético it is a first away win and seven points from three. That is roughly the rate a 69-point season is built at, which is all a third of a month can tell you. The useful marker is the manner rather than the total — the club that finished fourth went to the ground where it lost in April and led 3-0 at the break.

The low rating came from two things: Sevilla's unbeaten start and their 2-1 win over this opponent at this ground in April. Both looked like reasons to expect a tight afternoon, and neither survived contact with the match. What the price was really paying for was the twenty-six-point gap, and that was the part of the case we discounted most. The correction to make is narrow rather than sweeping — one 3-0 half does not prove that venue is irrelevant in this fixture, but it does suggest we let two recent scorelines outweigh a full season of table evidence.
