Post-Match Analysis

Match Summary

SS Lazio 2-2 AC Milan. A two-goal lead at the interval, and a point each at the end of it.

The half-time score is the unusual part. Milan had gone through all three of their previous fixtures this season level and goalless at the break — at Torino, at home to Venezia and away at Juventus — so conceding twice before it was a departure from everything the campaign had shown of them. Lazio had scored once in each of their first two matches and twice at Udinese; here they managed two inside forty-five minutes. Milan then took both goals of the second half to level the match.

Who scored them and when is not held for this fixture, and a 2-2 from two down invites exactly the kind of invention we do not publish. The two scores are the evidence, and they say Milan were the better side after the interval and not by enough.

Our preview went out on 6 September with Lazio sixth and Milan fourth, both on six points from two matches. Each played once more before kick-off: Lazio won 2-1 at Udinese, Milan drew 1-1 at Juventus, which left the hosts on nine points from three and the visitors on seven, both unbeaten. The fixture's own history held firm too. Milan had won one of the previous four meetings between the clubs; this makes it one win in five, with two Lazio wins and two draws, and every one of the five finished level or inside a single goal.

What It Settled

Four matchdays in, both clubs are still unbeaten: Lazio on ten points from four, Milan on eight. There is no race yet to be in or out of, with thirty-four matches remaining.

The more useful point concerns what each has shown about itself. Lazio finished ninth last season on 54 points with 41 goals, the lowest goals-per-match figure of any club in the top half, and a side built on one-goal afternoons. Two before half-time against a defence that conceded 35 across last season is a different kind of performance. Whether it is a new capacity or one good half is not something four matches can answer.

Milan came back from two down, which the club that won twenty matches last season by grinding out narrow scorelines would not obviously have done. They have also now twice failed to beat a direct rival.

Prediction Review

Our pre-match call was AC Milan Win at 2.25. It lost to a draw, which is the outcome the preview itself named as most likely.

That is the part worth owning. We wrote that a draw was not a remote scenario but the result both clubs' records made most ordinary, and then backed against it because the price sat in the band our published record likes best. A price argument is not a read of a fixture, and here it substituted for one.

The misjudgements are clear enough. We made last season's sixteen-point gap load-bearing in a fixture whose own history contradicted it — one Milan win in four meetings at the time, now one in five — and treated Lazio's clean sheets and low scoring as evidence they could not hurt Milan. They scored twice before half-time.

Verdict: lost
