Switzerland 0-0 Colombia, and Switzerland through 4-3 on penalties. Goalless at half-time, goalless after ninety, goalless through extra time — 120 minutes without a single goal, the only match of the entire tournament to finish that way.

Two of the most defensively disciplined sides in the competition met and produced exactly what their records suggested: nothing. Colombia had conceded one goal in four matches to that point; Switzerland had conceded three in four. Neither could break the other down across two hours.

The shoot-out was the tightest of the four in the tournament, decided by a single kick after both sides had converted at length.

Switzerland won Group B with seven points — a 1-1 draw with Qatar, then 4-1 against Bosnia-Herzegovina and 2-1 against Canada. Seven goals scored, three conceded. In the Round of 32 they beat Algeria 2-0, the only knockout match they won inside ninety minutes.

Colombia topped Group K with seven points, beating Uzbekistan 3-1 and Congo DR 1-0 before a goalless draw with Portugal. Four goals scored and one conceded — and that goalless draw against Portugal was the second time in the tournament they played out a scoreless ninety minutes against European opposition.

The Portugal match is the direct precedent. Colombia had already shown they could neutralise a technically superior side completely, and here they did it again for thirty minutes longer.

Switzerland advanced to a quarter-final against Argentina, losing 3-1 after extra time having been level at 1-1 through ninety minutes. Their tournament therefore included two ties that went to 120 minutes and one that went to penalties — 300 minutes of knockout football across three matches to reach the last eight.

For Colombia it is elimination without losing a match in normal time across the entire tournament: three wins, two draws, and a shoot-out defeat. Five matches, five goals scored, one conceded in open play. It is among the most defensively accomplished campaigns in the competition and among the least productive, and the two facts are the same fact.

This was the fourth and last penalty shoot-out of the tournament, and the only one in the Round of 16.
