United States 1-4 Belgium: FIFA World Cup Round of 16 Match Report

United States 1-4 Belgium, and the end of the host nation's tournament in the last sixteen. Belgium led 2-1 at half-time and added two more after the break in the most complete performance of their campaign.

Four goals in a knockout match is a total no other side reached in the Round of 16, and it came from a Belgium team that had scored two goals across two of its three group matches. Their tournament had been transformed by the Round of 32 win over Senegal, and this was the confirmation.

For the United States, conceding four at home ends a campaign whose defensive limits had been visible throughout. They shipped four goals in the group stage and four more here.

The United States finished second in Group D on six points, beating Paraguay 4-1 and Australia 2-0 before losing 3-2 to Turkey. They then beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in the Round of 32 — their only clean sheet of the tournament. Eight group goals scored and four conceded.

Belgium came through Group G on five points with a 1-1 draw against Egypt, a 0-0 against Iran and a 5-1 win over New Zealand. In the Round of 32 they came from behind twice to beat Senegal 3-2 after extra time.

That Senegal tie changed their tournament. A side that had managed one goal in two matches against Egypt and Iran scored three in 120 minutes, and then four more here. Seven goals in two knockout ties from a group campaign that produced six.

Belgium advanced to a quarter-final against Spain and lost 2-1 — the only knockout match in which Spain conceded, and the only goal against them in seven matches before the final. Reaching the last eight from a group stage that offered no indication of it is the biggest improvement curve of any side in the tournament.

For the United States, a Round of 16 exit as co-hosts is a reasonable outcome that ends on an unreasonable scoreline. Their campaign divides neatly: three comfortable wins against Paraguay, Australia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, and two matches against genuinely elite opposition — Turkey and Belgium — in which they conceded seven.

This was the heaviest defeat of the Round of 16 and one of only two matches in that round decided by more than a single goal.
