Post-Match Analysis

Match Summary

Elche arrived having just played out a goalless draw and promptly played out another. Villarreal CF 0-0 Elche CF, 0-0 at half-time too, in a fixture whose only two previous meetings on record had both produced goals and both been won by Villarreal, 2-1 and 3-1.

It is the Villarreal half of the table that makes the result worth recording. They came in eleventh on eight points from eight matches, with a goal difference of exactly nil — thirteen scored, thirteen conceded — four months after finishing third with seventy-two points and a difference of plus twenty-six. Their season had alternated without settling: two draws, three defeats, then wins at Málaga CF and at home to Levante UD, then a 1-0 loss at Real Madrid CF the week before this. Eight points from eight is a point a game, and a point a game across thirty-eight of them comes to thirty-eight points — three fewer than nineteenth place was worth last season.

Elche were eighteenth on six points from eight with a difference of minus six, but they came in on the better run of the two. After a start of no wins in six they had won 3-1 at RCD Espanyol de Barcelona on 18 September and drawn 0-0 at home with RC Celta de Vigo on 11 October, so this was a third match unbeaten and a second consecutive clean sheet — from a side that had conceded five at home to Barcelona in August.

With no half-time goals and no second-half goals, the record says nothing about the balance of the ninety minutes, and it would be invention to claim otherwise. What it does say is that neither attack found anything: Villarreal had scored in six of their eight matches before this, and Elche in five of the seven of theirs on record.

This fixture went unpreviewed. The site carried no October coverage until the backlog was cleared, so there is no call of ours attached to it.

What It Settled

A point each left Villarreal on nine from nine and Elche on seven from nine, with the gap between eleventh and eighteenth at two points — which is the clearest measure of how compressed the bottom half had become by the middle of October. Villarreal's goal difference stayed at nil, Elche's at minus six.

For Villarreal this was a second match without a win, and a single point from the two fixtures either side of the October break. Nine points from nine is not a crisis in October, and a quarter of a season is a quarter of a season, but it is well short of the pace that took them to third, and the clubs that finished sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth last season all did it on forty-two points, four more than the rate of nine from nine projects to.

Elche took the more useful point. Three matches unbeaten brought them to within two points of eleventh and left them with two clean sheets in a row, after a start in which they had conceded in every match. Eighteenth in October with that trend behind them is a better position than the raw place suggests; last season eighteenth place was worth forty-two points and nineteenth forty-one, which is the whole margin a season can turn on.
