1. FC Köln vs Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Our record: 1. FC Köln · Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Pre-Match Analysis
Head-to-Head
Leverkusen won both Rhine derbies last season, and neither was high-scoring. They beat Köln 2-0 at the BayArena on 13 December 2025, both goals arriving after a goalless first half, and won 2-1 at the RheinEnergieStadion on 25 April 2026, having led 1-0 at the break. Those are the only league meetings of the last two seasons: four goals to one on aggregate, and Leverkusen ahead at the end of both.
The totals, two goals and three, sit either side of the line we are interested in, so the direct record does not settle the question of goals. On the result, the two meetings and the current form disagree, which is part of why we leave the result alone. Köln have not taken a point off Leverkusen in either meeting, yet they arrive unbeaten at home and Leverkusen arrive having lost twice in a row. A summer window has passed since April, and the current form is the better guide here.
Form Guide
Last season put 27 points between the clubs. Leverkusen finished sixth on 59 from 17 wins, eight draws and nine defeats, with 68 scored and 47 conceded for +21. Köln were 14th on 32 points from seven wins, 11 draws and 16 defeats, 49 scored and 63 conceded for −14.
Eight games into this season, Leverkusen are sixth again on 13 points from four wins, a draw and three defeats, 18 scored and 16 conceded. They lost 3-2 at Elversberg on the opening weekend, then went five games unbeaten: 4-0 against Union, a 2-2 draw at Augsburg, 2-0 against Leipzig, 4-3 at Mainz and 2-1 against Freiburg on 18 October. The last two have gone badly, a 3-0 defeat at Hoffenheim and a 4-2 home defeat to Stuttgart on 31 October. Seven goals conceded in two games is the worst stretch of their season.
Köln are 15th on nine points from two wins, three draws and three defeats, nine scored and 12 conceded. They beat Hoffenheim 3-2 at home on the opening weekend, lost 4-1 at Stuttgart, drew 1-1 at home to Werder Bremen and lost 2-1 at Hamburg. A 2-1 home win over Mönchengladbach on 11 October was followed by a 1-0 defeat at Frankfurt, a 0-0 at home to Schalke and a 1-1 at Union on 1 November. Three without a win, and three goals in total, at both ends, in those three games.
Key Factors
The first factor is Leverkusen away from home, the strongest pattern either club has produced. Four away games, 19 goals: eight scored, 11 conceded. Every one of them cleared two and a half, and they have conceded at least twice in all four: 3-2 at Elversberg, 2-2 at Augsburg, 4-3 at Mainz and 3-0 at Hoffenheim.
Second, Leverkusen's defence has got worse, not better. Sixteen conceded in eight is more than any side above them in the table. The seven conceded in the last two games came against a Hoffenheim side that had lost four of its first six and a Stuttgart side that had lost five of its first seven.
Third, Köln at home score. They are unbeaten in four home games, two wins and two draws, and have scored in three of them. Ten goals have been scored in those four matches, six of them by Köln. The 0-0 against Schalke is the outlier, and Schalke have the lowest-scoring attack in the league.
Fourth, Köln's second halves. Seven of their nine goals have come after the interval, and they have trailed at half-time in four of eight games, coming back to beat Hoffenheim 3-2 here. Three of the four games in which Köln trailed at the break went over the line; of the four in which they were level or ahead, only one did.
Fifth, the case against, which we take seriously. Köln's last three games have all stayed under the line, three goals in total, and their attack has scored only nine all season, fourth-fewest in the division. The derby at Leverkusen in December finished 2-0. If this game takes on Köln's recent shape rather than Leverkusen's, the total will struggle.
Our Verdict
We take Over 2.5 Goals at 1.62 with medium confidence. The case rests mainly on Bayer 04 Leverkusen: every away game they have played this season has cleared the line, they have conceded in all of them, and they arrive having let in seven in two. 1. FC Köln have scored in three of four home games and do most of their scoring late. The division averages 3.5 goals a game. Those things point the same way.
It is medium, not high, because one of the two sides has lately been playing a different kind of game. Köln's last three matches have produced three goals, and the December derby at Leverkusen produced two. We rate the evidence for goals as better than the evidence for either result, which is why the total is the bet.
The market choice has our record behind it, though the record should not decide it. Over/under is the best market in our book at +10.3% across 73 settled picks, and the 1.60–1.80 band has returned +2.9%. At 1.62 the bet needs to land a little more than six times in ten.
The bet dies in a Köln kind of game: a slow first half, Leverkusen ahead by a goal, and a home side that has scored once in its last three matches unable to find a reply. A 1-0 or 2-0 for either side would do it.
