Six recorded meetings, fifteen goals, and four of the six stayed under three. The list reads 2-2, 1-1, 1-0, 2-0, 2-0, 3-1, and the two that broke the pattern managed four goals apiece rather than a flood. This is not a fixture that has ever threatened to become a shootout.

The sequence also has a habit of shutting one side out completely. Three of the last four meetings ended with one team on zero: Auxerre won 1-0 in November 2024, Angers won 2-0 in January 2025 and 2-0 again in November 2025. The Stade de l'Abbé-Deschamps yielded 22 points from six wins, four draws and seven defeats, with 18 goals scored there and 17 conceded. The two numbers to hold onto: 18 home goals is 1.06 a match, and they failed to score at home in eight of those 17. Nearly half of Auxerre's home season produced nothing at their own end. The relevant Angers number is the goal environment they carry with them. Only ten of their 34 matches went past two and a half goals — the lowest rate in the entire division. Away from the Raymond-Kopa they were 3-4-10 with 11 goals scored and 28 conceded, and they failed to score in seven of 17 road matches. Eleven away goals is 0.65 a match.

The first factor is Angers' league-low over rate. Ten in 34 is not a quirk of a few results; it is a whole season of matches that stayed small, home and away, in wins and defeats. A club that spent 24 of its 34 matches under two and a half goals brings that environment to whatever fixture it walks into.

The second is Auxerre's home attack, which is the other half of the same case. Eighteen goals in 17 home matches, with eight of those matches producing none at all. The hosts are not the side that blows a low total open; they are the side whose own numbers cap it.

The third is that neither defence is the problem. Auxerre conceded 17 in 17 at home and kept seven clean sheets there; Angers shipped 28 in 17 away, which is the loose part of this equation and the reason we are not going lower than two and a half.
