Deportivo Alavés vs Málaga CF

Our record: Deportivo Alavés · Málaga CF

Pre-Match Analysis

Head-to-Head

Málaga CF came up this summer and Deportivo Alavés spent last season in the Primera Division, so the two clubs have no meeting on our record before this date. There is no run of results to lean on, no pattern of one side suiting the other, and we are not going to manufacture one. Everything that follows comes from nine matches of Alavés and eight of Málaga in the current season, plus Alavés's final position last year — the only one of the two clubs that has one.

That makes the fixture a read on current form against a club whose top-flight level is still being established. For a Friday night match between seventh and twentieth, the honest framing is that one side's ceiling is known and the other's floor is what the table already shows.

Form Guide

Alavés finished last season 14th on 43 points: 11 wins, ten draws, 17 defeats, 44 goals scored and 56 conceded, a minus-12 difference. The start to this one was far better than that and has since reverted. Nine matches have produced three wins, two draws and four defeats for 11 points, 13 scored and ten conceded, which is seventh place — a reminder of how compressed everything below the top four is after two months.

The shape of those nine is what matters. All three wins arrived in their first four matches: 3-0 at home to Getafe CF on 15 August, 1-0 at home to Villarreal CF on 28 August and 5-2 at home to CA Osasuna on 6 September. Since then it has been one point from five matches — 1-2 at Real Racing Club de Santander, 0-1 at home to Valencia CF, 0-0 at Athletic Club, 1-2 at home to Club Atlético de Madrid and 1-2 away at RC Celta de Vigo on 18 October. Two of those defeats were at home, where Alavés had previously been perfect.

Málaga have no top-flight record from last season for us to cite. What they have built since August is four points from eight matches: no wins, four draws, four defeats, four goals scored and 13 conceded, bottom of the table. They have never scored more than one goal in a league match. At home they have drawn three of four — 1-1 with RC Deportivo La Coruña, 0-0 with Levante UD, 1-1 with RCD Espanyol — and lost 1-3 to Villarreal. Away from Málaga it is one point from four, with one goal scored and seven conceded: 0-2 at Atlético, 0-4 at Real Madrid CF, 1-1 at Celta and 0-1 at Getafe.

Key Factors

The home-and-away split is the clearest line in the fixture. Alavés have scored ten of their 13 goals in five home matches and only three in four away trips. Málaga have scored one goal in four away matches and have not won anywhere. Both splits point the same way, and neither is a two-match sample any more.

Set against that, Alavés's slump is real and the schedule is tight. One point from five is not form you back lightly, their last two home matches both ended in defeat, and they played on 18 October, five days before this kick-off. Málaga, by contrast, last played on 9 October and come into this with a fortnight behind them and a match in hand on most of the division.

Málaga's draws are the counterweight to their position. Four of their eight matches finished level, three of those at home, and the 0-0 with Levante shows a side capable of closing a game down. The problem is the other end: four goals in eight matches means they need the game to stay at 0-0 or 1-0 to take anything, because they have never shown they can chase one.

Finally, what the fixture means. Alavés at seventh on 11 points are seven points clear of a club that has yet to win, and a home match against the bottom side is the kind of fixture a mid-table club is expected to convert. Málaga need points from somewhere, and the away schedule so far suggests it will not be from the ones against the top half.

Our Verdict

The pick is Deportivo Alavés Win at 1.65 with medium confidence. Alavés's three wins all came at home and two of them by three goals; Málaga are winless in eight, have four goals to their name and have managed one of them on the road. A 1X2 pick in this band is modest territory for us — 195 settled straight-result picks at a 55.9% strike for minus-1.0%, and the 1.60–1.80 price range at minus-2.1% — so we are not claiming an edge from the market itself.

Medium rather than high is deliberate, because two of the signals conflict. Alavés have taken one point from five matches and lost their last two at home, which is the opposite of the record their first month suggested, and they arrive on a five-day turnaround against an opponent who has been idle for two weeks. A club in that state meeting a side that has drawn half its matches is not a straightforward favourite.

What beats the pick is a repeat of Málaga's 1-1 away at Celta or their home 0-0 with Levante: a compact, low-event match that Alavés cannot break down, given they have scored in only three of their last five. The draw is the live alternative here, not a Málaga win, which is why double chance on the hosts holds no value and the straight win is the bet worth taking.
