US Lecce vs Genoa CFC

Five meetings, seven goals, and not one of them decided by more than a single goal. That is the whole story of this fixture in recent seasons, and it is unusually relevant to a bet that only needs one side to avoid defeat.

Lecce won 1-0 at home on 22 September 2023. Genoa won 2-1 at home on 28 January 2024. The sides drew 0-0 at Lecce on 5 January 2025. Genoa won 2-1 at home again on 14 March 2025. And the two opened this season against each other at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on 23 August 2025, a 0-0 that was goalless at the break as well.

Two patterns come out of that. The home side has not lost any of the five — three home wins and two draws, with Genoa's pair coming in Liguria and Lecce's in Puglia. And the scoring has been thin: three of the five produced one goal or none, and the two 2-1 results are the only games in the set to reach three.

The counterweight is the direction of the last three. Genoa are unbeaten in them, with a win and two draws, and Lecce's most recent victory over these opponents dates to September 2023. On their own ground, though, Lecce have not lost to Genoa in either of the last two visits and have not conceded to them at home in that time.

Lecce finished 17th last season on 34 points, an 8-10-20 record with 27 scored and 58 conceded. This season is a near-repeat of the same shape: 17th again, 35 points from 37, nine wins, eight draws and 20 defeats, 27 scored and 50 conceded for a minus 23 difference. Twenty-seven goals in 37 matches is exactly what they scored across the whole of last season, with a game still to come.

Home form is the uncomfortable part. Four wins, five draws and nine defeats in 18, with 12 goals scored and 24 conceded. Only one club in Serie A has scored fewer at home this season, and one other matches Lecce's 12. Their points have been won on the road, and recently in dramatic fashion: a 2-1 win at Pisa on 1 May and a 3-2 win at Sassuolo on 17 May, either side of a 0-1 home defeat to Juventus on 9 May. Before that came a 2-0 loss at Bologna on 12 April, a 1-1 home draw with Fiorentina on 20 April and a 0-0 at Verona on 25 April.

Genoa were 13th last season on 43 points, 10-13-15, with 37 scored and 49 conceded. They are 15th now on 41 from 37, ten wins, 11 draws and 16 defeats, 41 scored and 50 conceded. Away from home they are 4-7-7 in 18, 19 scored and 24 conceded — four away wins all season, but only seven defeats, which is the record of a side that draws a lot on its travels.

Their last five: a 2-1 home win over Sassuolo on 12 April, a 2-1 win at Pisa on 19 April, a 0-2 home defeat to Como on 26 April, a 0-0 draw at Fiorentina on 10 May and a 1-2 home defeat to Milan on 17 May.

The stakes are entirely one-sided, and that is the strongest argument on the page. Lecce are 17th on 35 with Cremonese 18th on 34, and the two clubs are separated by a single point with one match each remaining. A Lecce win takes them to 38, beyond anything Cremonese can reach. Anything less and the afternoon is decided elsewhere, or on tie-breakers between two clubs who split their two meetings this season.

Genoa, by contrast, are 15th on 41 and cannot be caught from below. Their season ends here regardless of the result, with only a place or two in the table to gain or lose.

The third factor is the fixture's scoring history. Seven goals in five meetings, three of them one-goal-or-fewer affairs, and the last two encounters producing a 0-0 and a 2-1. Neither of these attacks is built to blow the other away — Lecce have 27 league goals, Genoa 41.

Fourth, Genoa's away profile favours the selection more than their league position does. Seven draws in 18 away matches is a lot, and their two most recent trips brought a 2-1 win at the bottom club and a goalless draw at Fiorentina.

The case here is simpler than in most of this round. One side has its status in the division riding on the result; the other has nothing left to settle. Lecce have shown they can produce under that pressure, winning 2-1 at Pisa and 3-2 at Sassuolo in the last four weeks, and they have not lost at home to these opponents in either of the last two meetings. A fixture that has produced seven goals in five attempts is one where a single moment decides matters, and the selection survives every version of that except a Genoa win.

Free of pressure and with nothing to lose, visiting teams on the final day are often more dangerous than their motivation suggests.
