AS Roma 4-0 ACF Fiorentina, and the margin is the surprise rather than the winner. Roma led 1-0 at the interval and scored three more after it, which turns a match that looked like every other home win they recorded last season into the heaviest result of Serie A's opening round.

The pre-match table explained the outcome without predicting the score. Roma finished 2025/26 third on 73 points, 31 clear of a Fiorentina side that came fifteenth on 42; at the Olimpico they went 13-3-3, conceded ten goals in nineteen matches and kept eleven clean sheets, the best home defensive record in the division. What that record did not contain was emphasis. Only six of those nineteen home fixtures produced three goals or more, and the season was built on 1-0s and 2-0s closed off well before the end.

For forty-five minutes this followed the template exactly. The second half broke the pattern in Roma's favour. Very little on its own, which is worth stating plainly on the first weekend of a season. One match is not evidence of improvement or decline for either club, and last season's forty-league-match sample remains the better guide to both.

What it does establish is that the gap between third and fifteenth did not narrow over the summer, at least not in Rome. Roma's opening-day scoreline was the largest winning margin of the round, ahead of Internazionale's 4-1 and every other result on the card, and it was achieved at the ground where they took 42 of their 73 points.

Fiorentina, meanwhile, finished last season with the division's highest draw count and the fifteenth-placed points total, and have started this one by losing away without scoring. That is one bad afternoon rather than a trend, but the profile it repeats — a side that avoids defeat more often than it wins and struggles for goals on the road — is the same one the table described in May.

Our pre-match call was AS Roma Win at 1.70. It landed, and it landed on the reasoning rather than by accident: Roma's thirteen home wins in nineteen implied a rate well above the 59 percent the price required, and Fiorentina's five away wins from nineteen offered no correction.

The stated risk was the draw, not a Fiorentina win, and at half-time a 1-0 was still the version of the match that could have slipped. It did not. The one thing we called wrong was the shape — we expected a controlled 1-0 or 2-0 and said an over would be reading the record backwards.
