Champions League ties are the hardest fixtures on this site to be right about, and the record reflects it. Two-legged football distorts everything a domestic-league read relies on: a side protecting an away goal plays a different match to the same side chasing one, and the tactical shape can change between the first leg and the second in ways form data does not capture.
The knockout rounds also compress the sample. A domestic season gives thirty-eight chances to be right about a club; a European campaign might give four. That makes any win rate on this page a smaller sample than the league pages, and worth reading with that in mind.
What the reports below record is the reasoning as it stood before kick-off, set against what happened. Several were beaten by the single thing we flagged as the risk, which is its own kind of useful.
