Post-Match Analysis

Match Summary

In both of last season's meetings Athletic Club were two goals up at half-time. This time it was Levante UD: Levante UD 3-1 Athletic Club, 2-0 at the break and a goal each after it, the first half-time lead of Levante's season.

It was also their first win since 29 August, when they beat Betis 5-2 at the Ciutat de València. In between came five matches without one, and a slide down the table: Levante kicked off seventeenth on seven points from eight with a goal difference of minus four. Athletic were eleventh on nine from seven, plus one, with a game in hand.

The match had been due on 16 September, and the table had moved a long way since. When the preview was written Levante were tenth on four points from three and Athletic ninth on six from four. Athletic's defence had kept improving, with one goal conceded in their five matches before this one. They conceded three here, as many as in their 1-3 home defeat by Sevilla in August. At the other end they had scored once in three matches, and one was all they managed again.

At home Levante have now scored at least twice in every league match this season, and none of the four has had fewer than four goals: 5-2, 2-4, 3-3 and 3-1.

What It Settled

Levante climb to ten points from nine with a goal difference of minus two; Athletic stay on nine from eight and drop to minus one. A fixture the September table framed as tenth against ninth was played as seventeenth against eleventh, and it puts Levante a point ahead of a side that finished three points above them last season, Athletic on 45 and Levante on 42.

The result sharpens the picture of Levante as two different sides depending on the venue: thirteen scored and ten conceded in four home matches, two scored in five away. One win does not say which of those sides their season belongs to.

For Athletic, eight matches is a small enough sample that a single 3-1 swings the goal difference from plus one to minus one. It does not make them last season's side, which conceded 58, but it ends a defensive run that had looked like a genuine change.

Prediction Review

Our pre-match call was Double Chance X2 (Athletic Club or Draw) at 1.58. It went out at medium confidence on 6 September; the postponement notice said it would stand or fall on the reasoning as written.

It rested on last season's two meetings, both won by Athletic from 2-0 up at the break, on Athletic's back-to-back clean sheets, and on Levante hosting Barcelona three days before the original date. The schedule point did not survive the move; by 21 October Athletic had the shorter rest, four days to five. The defensive point held until this match. Levante at home was the misjudgment. The preview said that if the side that beat Betis 5-2 turned up, the head-to-head and the clean sheets would not be worth much; by kick-off that side had scored twice or more in every home match, against an Athletic attack scoring once a game.

Verdict: lost
