SC Freiburg 4-1 SV Werder Bremen: Bundesliga Match Report, 30 August 2026

Two goals up at the interval and four by the end: SC Freiburg 4-1 SV Werder Bremen on the opening weekend. The half-time score of 2-0 had already tilted the afternoon, and the second half produced three more goals without ever threatening to turn it around.

The pre-match case rested on four measurements that all pointed one way, and none of them pointed the wrong way on the day. Freiburg finished 2025/26 seventh on 47 points with a home record of 9-5-3, 33 goals scored and 22 conceded, and 32 of those 47 points collected at their own ground. Werder finished fifteenth on 32 points and went 3-4-10 on the road, scoring eighteen goals in seventeen away matches. A home side that does almost all of its work at home met a visiting side that does almost none of its work away, and the result reflected the mismatch rather than complicating it.

One thing did change. Freiburg had won the previous four meetings without conceding, and Werder had not scored against them since January 2024. Bremen's goal here ends that particular run, which is worth recording precisely because it is the only line in the fixture history that moved. It did not come close to changing the afternoon: the hosts were two clear at the break, and the visitors' single reply arrived in a second half that also produced two more for Freiburg.

Three points for Freiburg on the first weekend of the season, and nothing about either club that was not already visible in May.

The reasonable reading is that both sides opened by being what they were. Freiburg's 2025/26 was a study in venue dependence — 32 points at home, fifteen away, a negative overall goal difference built entirely on the road — and their first home match returned four goals and three points. Werder's was a struggle to score, with 37 goals across the whole campaign, the lowest of any club that stayed up, and their first away trip produced one goal and a three-goal defeat.

What it does not settle is anything about the shape of either season. One match is one match, and Freiburg's problem last year was never the fixtures at home; it was the seventeen they played elsewhere. That question is untouched by this.

Our pre-match call was SC Freiburg Win at 1.62, rated high confidence, and the confidence was justified by the route as well as the outcome. We wrote that a goalless first half was the only path Werder's numbers supported, and that a visiting side scoring eighteen goals in seventeen away matches had very little chance of retrieving a deficit. Freiburg led at half-time and the deficit was never retrieved.

The one caution we raised — that this was matchday one and the home advantage carrying Freiburg's season had been interrupted by a three-month break — turned out not to matter. That was still worth raising. At 1.62 the market implied about 62 per cent against a home win rate of 53 per cent for all opposition and considerably higher against opposition of this standard, and the price was the reason to take the position rather than an obstacle to it.
