Wolverhampton 0-1 Tottenham: Premier League Match Report

Wolverhampton 0-1 Tottenham was goalless at the interval and settled by the only goal of the second period. A match between 20th and 18th, decided by the narrowest margin available, and one of the more consequential single goals of the Premier League round.

Sixteen points behind the club in 17th, with four rounds and twelve points available, the arithmetic finally ran out here rather than at any of the heavier defeats that preceded it. A goalless first half at home against a team in the relegation places was the last realistic opportunity their season offered, and they did not take it.

Our pre-match call was Tottenham Win at 1.75. It came in, and the price was reasonable for a fixture where the home side had beaten Aston Villa and Liverpool within the month. What tipped the reasoning was the difference in what each team needed: Tottenham were in the bottom three and out of excuses, while Wolverhampton had nothing left to protect. That is usually the stronger signal in late April, and the goalless first half was the reminder that it does not guarantee anything. One goal was enough because Wolverhampton had conceded seven in their previous two away matches and had nothing to answer with here. Verdict: won
