TSG 1899 Hoffenheim vs FC Schalke 04

Our record: TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

Pre-Match Analysis

Head-to-Head

One shared away day says a good deal about both of these clubs. Hoffenheim went to Köln on the opening weekend, led 1-0 at half-time and lost 3-2. Schalke went to the same ground on 24 October and drew 0-0. Five goals in one game and none in the other is a fair summary of how each has spent the autumn.

That is as close as the record gets. Schalke were not in the Bundesliga last season, so there is no league meeting between these clubs in the last two seasons and no direct result to lean on. We would rather leave the space empty than fill it with a second-tier season that tells us little about the top flight. Everything below comes from eight games each in this division, which is a usable sample but not a large one.

Form Guide

Hoffenheim finished fifth last season on 61 points from 18 wins, seven draws and nine defeats, scoring 65 and conceding 52 for +13. They were one point behind Stuttgart in fourth.

This season has gone much worse. Eight games in, they are 14th on nine points from three wins and five defeats, with no draws, 14 scored and 16 conceded. They lost 3-2 at Köln and 3-2 at home to Dortmund, beat Stuttgart 2-1, lost 3-1 at Paderborn and 3-2 at home to Hamburg. Then came their best spell: a 2-1 win at Mönchengladbach and a 3-0 home win over Leverkusen on 25 October. A 2-0 defeat at Werder Bremen on 31 October ended that.

Schalke are 17th on six points from one win, three draws and four defeats, with four scored and nine conceded. They lost 3-0 at Augsburg on the opening weekend, held Bayern to a 0-0 at home, and won 3-1 at Union Berlin on 11 September, the only win of their season. Since then they have drawn 0-0 at home to Elversberg, lost 2-1 at Freiburg and 1-0 at home to Mainz, drawn 0-0 at Köln and lost 2-0 at home to Leipzig on 31 October. Five without a win, and one goal scored in those five.

Key Factors

The promoted unknown is the first factor, and Schalke's shape is extreme. Four goals is the lowest total in the division. They have failed to score in six of eight games and have not scored at home at all. Their defence is the opposite: nine conceded, joint second-fewest in the league, and all three of their draws were 0-0. Away from home they are a little more open, four scored and six conceded in four trips, but three of those four goals came in one afternoon at Union.

Second, Hoffenheim at home score. They have scored at least twice in all four home games, nine goals in total, and every one of those games cleared two and a half. Schalke's defence has kept Bayern out and has also conceded three at Augsburg: it is good, not impregnable.

Third, Hoffenheim's second halves are the reason this is not high. They have conceded 13 of their 16 goals after the interval, and they have lost two games they led at half-time, at Köln and at home to Dortmund. Three of their five defeats have finished 3-2. This is a side that scores freely and then gives goals back.

Fourth, the draw. Hoffenheim have not drawn in eight league games. Schalke have drawn three times, all goalless. Either one club's habit gives way or the other's does, and Schalke's 0-0s are the most likely way this fixture fails a home win. Hoffenheim have failed to score only once all season, though, at Bremen on 31 October.

Fifth, what the fixture means. Hoffenheim are 14th, three points above Schalke and two clear of the play-off place. A Schalke win would put them level on points. For a club that finished fifth last season, a home defeat to the league's lowest scorers would be hard to explain away.

Our Verdict

We back TSG 1899 Hoffenheim Win at 1.76 with medium confidence. The home side have scored at least twice in every home game, and FC Schalke 04 have scored in two of their eight matches all season and in none of their last three. Hoffenheim's 3-0 win over Leverkusen on 25 October shows what this attack does when the defence holds, and Schalke's attack is the weakest the defence will have faced at home.

It stops at medium for two reasons. Schalke's defence is good, and a side that has drawn 0-0 three times knows how to make an afternoon slow. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim have also lost two leads and three games by 3-2, and a team that concedes most of its goals late can lose a game it has controlled.

Our numbers are broadly neutral here. 1X2 has returned +1.5% across 213 settled picks at a 57.7% strike rate, and the 1.60–1.80 band +2.9%. At 1.76 the bet needs to land a little more than 56 times in a hundred, which an attack scoring twice a game at home against one that barely scores should clear.

Two things beat this: a Schalke 0-0, or a late Schalke goal against a Hoffenheim side that has given up 13 after half-time. The first is their habit; the second is Hoffenheim's.
